Together, they create a defend-and-rebuild cycle: resveratrol shields existing collagen structures from oxidative breakdown, and collagen peptides stimulate fibroblasts to synthesize new fibres — resulting in a net gain that neither ingredient achieves alone.

It is worth being precise about what "elasticity improvement" means in this context. The researchers used a cutometer — a suction device that measures the skin's ability to return to its original position after deformation. This is a validated, reproducible method for assessing one dimension of skin biomechanics. It does not, however, directly measure collagen density, fibroblast activity, or any molecular endpoint. The mechanism by which oral collagen peptides might produce this effect remains an open and actively debated question.

The trial was industry-funded, which does not automatically invalidate its findings but does warrant disclosure. The conflict-of-interest statement notes that the lead funder manufactures a hydrolyzed collagen product, though the study protocol was independently registered and the statistical analysis was conducted by a third-party biostatistics firm.

More substantively, the trial does not compare collagen peptides against other interventions — topical retinoids, vitamin C supplementation, or dietary protein optimization — that might produce comparable effects on skin elasticity by different mechanisms. It also does not follow participants beyond 12 weeks, so we have no data on whether the observed improvements persist, plateau, or reverse with continued or discontinued use.

The participant pool — exclusively women, predominantly northern European, age-restricted to 35–65 — limits generalizability. Collagen synthesis rates and the bioavailability of peptides may differ meaningfully across skin types, hormonal profiles, and age cohorts not represented in this sample.

Taken on its own terms, the Proksch 2024 trial is a well-executed piece of clinical evidence. It uses validated endpoints, an adequate sample size (powered at 80% for a 15% between-group difference), appropriate randomization and blinding, and pre-registered outcome measures. The finding that hydrolyzed collagen peptides improve cutometer-measured skin elasticity in middle-aged women, at doses of 5–10g/day, over 12 weeks, is credible within those constraints.
